Hire car versus Taxi

The most convenient way of getting to Sierra Nevada is by hire car or taxi as public transport is limited.

A taxi for four between Malaga airport and the resort including the return journey costs 362€. We can book this for you. Hiring a car is cheaper, but you need to factor in:

- Petrol costs
- Parking costs in the resort (if no parking space is included with your accommodation). The public car park costs 16-20€ per day depending on the dates of your visit. For all parking options please see parking.
- You won´t need a car whilst you are staying in the resort unless you are planning a day-off from skiing to go down to Granada or visit the famous Alhambra Palace (we can arrange tickets if required)
- Sometimes snow chains are needed to reach the resort (more about this below)
- Some clients have reported very long delays waiting for their car hire at the airport

A special note for those staying in rental apartments rather than a hotel:

If after checking-out on your departure day you intend to ski for the day before heading home, please note that there is nowhere in the resort where you can store luggage. In this case, a hire car will enable you to store your luggage until you are ready to leave. (If you stay in a hotel, you will be able to leave your luggage at reception till the end of the day).

Car Hire and Snow Chains

The mountain road is really good all the way up to the resort itself. The only thing to bear in mind is that if you happen to be arriving or departing when it´s actually snowing or has just snowed on the mountain road then you may well need snow chains. The road is cleared very quickly after each snowfall, and often if it is snowing on the slopes it´s only falling as rain on the road. We recommend checking the weather forecast a day or two before your visit and only worry if snow is forecast below 2000m altitude.

WHEN THE WEATHER FORECAST INDICATES POSSIBLE SNOWFALL, POLICE OFTEN CARRY OUT STOP-CHECKS ON THE MOUNTAIN ROAD TO ENSURE YOU HAVE SNOW CHAINS IN THE EVENT OF THE ROAD BECOMING TREACHEROUS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE CHAINS FOR YOUR CAR OR ELSE A 4x4 VEHICLE YOU MAY BE TURNED AROUND.

Chains can be acquired from most petrol stations around Granada and on the mountain route up to the resort. Along the Granada bypass there are two car stores that also sell chains, called "Tiendas Aurgi" (on the Malaga junction), and "Centers Auto" (on the Armilla Junction). In the resort there are a couple of places that also sell chains, but there is often a higher markup in price than down in Granada!

NOTE: If using GPS, please ensure you type in Sierra Nevada with it's postal code: 18196 otheriwse you are likely to be directly on a very wild journey to the back of beyond and nowhere near the ski resort! OUR RECOMMENDATION: Follow the road signs and map in a more traditional manner!!

Sierra Essence and the British Ski Center have arranged discounted rates for our clients with the following companies with bases at Malaga airport and across Andalucia:

Airports

Spain has many international airports available for you to choose from. For Sierra Nevada, the nearest and most convenient airport is Granada which currently receives direct flights from the UK with British Airways & Easyjet from London City, London Gatwick and Manchester (correct as of July 2018).

Malaga is possibly the most convenient airport in terms of flight options and variations as well as being a relatively short transfer by skiing standards. It is also perfectly feasible to fly into Seville, Gibraltar, Jerez, Almeria, Alicante, Murcia and even Madrid airports. The roads in Spain are generally very good and extremely well signed. Getting to Sierra Nevada is easier by car than by public transport.
